What are the Types of Cosmetic Breast Surgery?

Cosmetic surgery is a type of plastic surgery which helps to improve a person’s appearance. This type of surgery continues to grow in popularity, and procedures are available for almost any part of the body, but the choice to undergo cosmetic surgery such as Breast augmentation surgery or any other cosmetic surgery should not be taken lightly. The results are often permanent. Therefore, it is important to be sure about the decision.

A number of women who are unsatisfied with their breasts prefer to undergo breast surgeries and therefore it is growing in popularity. The types of cosmetic breast surgery typically can be divided into four general categories such as augmentation, reduction, reconstruction and lifts.

Different Types of Cosmetic Breast Surgery

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is the type of cosmetic surgery performed to enhance the appearance, size and contour of a woman’s breasts. Women might consider breast augmentation for different reasons. For example, some women feel their breasts are too small in relation to their body contour while others may desire to correct an asymmetry in breast size.

This breast cosmetic surgery is performed with implants placed over or under the pectoralis chest muscle. The incision can be placed in the armpit or lower breast. The procedure of breast augmentation can be assisted with endoscopes. In case implants are placed beneath the pectoralis chest muscle, there is less interference with screening mammography. It is important to be aware that breast implants may interfere with the detection of cancer and that breast compression during mammography may cause implant rupture.

What are the Options for Breast Augmentation?

For breast augmentation, the breast implant is used. The breast implant is basically a silicone shell filled with either saline or silicone gel. Subglandular placement may offer women with sagging breasts better results.

  • Surface – Two kinds of implant surface types are available to augmentation patients, smooth and textured. Textured implants have small bumps on their surface and it helps to reduce the risk of contracture. Smooth implants have a smooth surface. Therefore, it is preferred by various surgeons.
  • Filler – There are choices of implants filled with cohesive silicone gel or with saline. Both types have been used since the earliest days of breast implantation. Although there is no evidence to prove that exposure to silicone can cause any disease in human beings, however, some women prefer to have their implants filled with saline.

  • Shape – According to the shape, there are two options for implants, teardrop or round. Round implants are best and offer favorable results. And, teardrop implants may be a fit for women who have had parts of the breast removed during mastectomy reconstruction.

Breast Reduction

Breast reduction or reduction mammoplasty is done since large, heavy, breasts can be uncomfortable. In fact, the excess weight of breasts can cause neck pain, back pain, skin irritation, and numbness or weakness. Breast reduction involves the removal of excess skin, fat and glandular tissue. It is quite possible that with this type of surgery, scarring can be extensive.

Some of the side effects of Breast reduction may include pain and lumpiness from scar tissue and the inability to breastfeed. It may also reduce the breast appearance, volume, and contour while preserving breast sensation and function.

Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that includes recreating a breast with the desired appearance, contour, and volume with implants. In case if an implant is used, the implant is sized perfectly to match the opposite breast. A breast can also be recreated using a woman’s own tissue and at times, a segment of the lower abdominal wall can be used. Other tissue options for autologous reconstruction may include the back muscle and skin or a segment of a buttock.

Breast Lifts

It is possible that in some women the skin is not resilient enough to support the weight of the breast, causing the breasts to sag. In such conditions called ptosis, there is too much skin compared to breast tissue. For a breast lift or mastopexy, the excess skin must be removed.

There are various types of cosmetic breast surgery. If you wish to undergo any of these surgical procedures, you must consult your cosmetic surgeon before deciding to undergo the procedure.
